why cooldown studio

We partner with world class illustrators to bring you prints that change the way we perceive the climate crisis. Prints that take the abstract messaging surrounding the climate crisis and translate it into emotions, feelings and hope for the future.

with each print = 100 trees planted

Because neutral is not enough. And big change starts small.

Who are the artists?

The artists are a diverse group of leading conceptual illustrators from across the world. They translate complex concepts into accessible, insightful and bold narratives. Each illustrator has submitted 1-2 pieces of their work most relevant to the climate crisis.

Does this support artists?

Absolutely. The artist gets paid for each print sold.

Are your prints and frames sustainable?

We're working hard to be sustainable. We use water-based inks which are 100% non-hazardous, toxin-free and vegan friendly.

Our paper, wood and packaging is FSC-approved (or in certain print labs, sourced from sustainably managed forests). FSC is the Forest Stewardship Council, an organisation that certifies forests to ensure they meet the highest environmental and social standards. Where possible, we use recycled materials.

And because we work with an international network of print labs, we can create your prints as close to you as possible. This significantly reduces carbon emissions from international transport.

How can you afford to plant 100 trees?

Good question! There are a couple of important points to consider. The first is that we're mostly planting mangrove trees. Have a look at our reforestation page for more details but in short, mangroves grow propagules at 3-5 years of age. These propagules can be picked and used to give rise to a new tree at a different reforestation site.

It basically means we skip the seed to seedling stage and go straight to the seedling (i.e. the propagules). This saves a lot of time and money! And bonus, mangrove marshes have very soft soil so there's no need to dig a hole for each propagule. In simple terms, you can just stick them in the ground!

The second point is that our planting partner (Eden Reforestation) is one of the best in the world at low cost, community orientated, large scale reforestation projects.

But let's be real, it isn't free. So we're hoping some of you tell your friends who would appreciate some trees being planted and climate art! That way we can spend more on trees and less on bombarding everyone with ads on Facebook! Mark is already rich enough.

Why mangrove trees?

Get ready for some science! Studies have shown that Mangroves "sequester carbon at a rate two to four times greater than mature tropical forests" and contain "the highest carbon density of all terrestrial ecosystems" (Fatoyinbo et al, 2017). This is basically because of the large amounts of biomass stored underground in their roots system.

They've got such extensive roots as they get pushed around by waves, tides and need extra stability in the unstable mud.

The good news is that this makes them one of the most effective and economic methods of sequestering carbon emissions. Each mangrove tree planted by Eden Reforestation Projects removes over 308kg (680lbs) of CO2 from the atmosphere over the life of the tree.

What is the impact of 100 mangrove trees?

Well, we're glad you asked. Over the life of an average mangrove tree, 308 kg (680lbs) of CO2 or 12.3 kg (185lbs) per year per tree. So 30,800 kgs of CO2 sequestration for your 100 trees.

But what does that actually mean? That's the equivalent emissions of

- 1,311 bags of wasted being recycled instead of going to landfill
- a little more than a flight from NYC to London
- an average home's total energy use for 3.7 years!

Not to mention alleviating poverty in some of the poorest communities in the world and helping to rebuild entire ecosystems. Whoop whoop!

The EPA has a greenhouse gas equivalent calculator if you want to check the above and you can find some details above mangrove forest carbon sequestration here.

How will I know if my trees have been planted?

So it works like this. We have an agreement with Eden to plant 100 trees with each product sold. We report our sales directly to them each month and make the relevant contributions to plant the trees!

You can always contact them and verify that your trees have been planted! But remember to wait until the end of the month from when you purchased :)

Do you plant indigenous/ native species?

We only plant native species and never plant invasive species. You can see the full list for tree species in Madagascar here.
